I have a debate going on in the office. What is the true throughput on gigabit ethernet? Some say 730mb but why?

The minimum theoretical number of 64 byte frames that can be transmitted is 1,487,946, which is about 760 Mbps. (761,828,352)

The theoretical maximum for 1500 byte frames works out to about 980 Mbps.

I can look up the number if you need it. There are several switches that are capable of that throughput on all ports.

If you are interested in data throughput, you must subtract the Ethernet and IP headers. I typically get 90 + Mbps of data transfer on a 100 Mb link, measured by Chariot using File-send-long script..

There are no theoretical problems that would prevent similar speeds at Gig E, if the PC HW was up to transferring at those speeds.
