Using Netflow?

I have a requirement for smaller offices using PIX 501's for general internet access to report badwidth usage. I came across some information on using Netflow and I am curious if this or a similar feature set is available on the PIX? Specifically I need to report on bandwidth usage from a PIX 501 or 506.

Thanks,

Jason

Hello Jason,

Cisco PIX does not support netflow. It runs an OS called Finesse and netflow is only supported on Cisco IOS.

You can however monitor and graph the bandwidth using SNMP.

Configure your PIX:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_tech_note09186a0080094a13.shtml#snmptothepix

And then configure MRTG to make your graphics:

Whereas with netflow you can make some pretty wicked graphics or get a lot of information from your device in general, the above will just produce an input and output traffic graph, no details on what type of traffic it was.

I hope this helped.

With kind regards,

Kevin

Sniffing with Ntop can get all you the same info, without using netflow. www.ntop.org, its very cool to do stats and etc. + its free.
