I need to test our firewall for vulnerability from the internet. Can anyone recommend a simple and efficient test tool for this purpose (portscan etc.)

This is a pretty good scanner and it is free. Scroll down about half way and click the "Shields Up" link. Common & custom ports scanned and a few other nice tricks to tell you what someone can easily retrive from computers that are behind the firewall.

Opensource portscanners linux:

Linux is still the platform for all that kind of tools.
By the the way a Vulnerablity scanner and a Port scanner is a huge diffrence !!!
A good vulnerability scanner for linux is:
