while reading IP Multicast i came across many terms but find it difficult to connect them with each other like :

  1. sparse mode
  2. dense mode
  3. sparse-dense mode
  4. SSM
  5. default MDT
  6. use of IGMP
  7. MSDP
  8. RPF
  9. (*,G)

any help to understand which concept can be used under what situation will be great.

Hello.

1,2,3 - multicast modes.

4 - source-specific multicast (sparse mode without *,G )

5 - term from mVPN

6 - IGMP is a signalling protocol for end-hosts (receivers) on L2;

7 - protocol for inter-AS or anycast RP to single source-active multicast flows;

8 - reverse path forwarding - on which interface multicast will be accepted (as the same flow may come on multiple interfaces and we need to avoid duplications)

9 - multicast route for specific group and non-specified source (bidir mode or serder is not known)
