Vpn client kills audio completely on machine - why?

Recently noticed periodically I'd lose audio on a machine and the audio devices properties only show "Modem #0 Line playback/record" and not the installed devices. When I tested it, I discovered it happens everytime I connect to an external network via cisco vpn client version 5.0.03.0560.

I have to do a system restore to reset it. What is cisco doing that causes this and how can I fix it?

I figured out it turns off Windows Audio so that's easy enough to fix (in services) but still curious why it happens?
