Dear All,

I have 2 nos 4 RU servers and 1 2 RU server ,  one is main and one is back up, I am going to install 200 Cisco indoor 2421 cameras.  while making confirgarations I had logon to back up server and did 20 camrea configarations.

But i asigned these cameras to main server only. they are working.

My questions is .

1. i login to main server and trying to see cameras feeds. but not getting. i will get it when i log on to back up server

2. should i configur all those cameras from main server again and delete the configaration in back up server

3. when all config are in main server ,  if the main server goes down ,  will all configarataion will be transfer to back up server

Pls suggest me solution ,

Thanks ,

Raghunandan

Hi Raghunandan,

If I understand correctly, you want to use 1 4RU server as your main server and configure 200 SD cameras on this server, and use the other 4RU server as a backup server.

Let me first explain the role of a backup server.  VSM does not (yet) provide a High Availability (failover) option.   Database information is not synchronized between a VSMS server and another VSMS server which you have configured as a backup, with a backup repository.  The function of a backup server is to allow configuring a backup archive from your primary feed for each camera.  Each night at a pre-determined time, the entire previous 24 hours for that feed is copied to the backup server, and should then be available for viewing as a shelved archive from VSOM.  Should your main VSMS server go down, the only video footage which would be available on the backup server is that archived video which had been copied and retained (for the days to live value you set.)  There isn't an automatic transfer of proxy information, and your live video would not be available until the main server was brought back online (though you could still see individual camera live feeds by connecting directly into the camera web interface.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of doing archive backups in VSOM

  1. Setup your regular VSMS server as normal.
  2. Setup a separate backup server and ensure that check-box is selected for at least one backup repository.
  3. Inside of VSOM, register both media servers (Admin >> Servers >> Add new server):
    • Register the first media server as normal
    • Register the second server as a backup server
  1. Create a new archive (Admin >> Archives >> Start new archive)
  2. Setup your archive as normal
  3. Click the "Backup" tab
  4. Fill out the form so that the archive is backed up to the secondary server on the scheduled basis.  (Once every 24 hours, at the time specified)

On another note, 200 cameras is a high load to ask one server to carry.  If you keep the bitrate reasonable (768k or less), you may not run into performance issues (though I would steer clear of configuring motion archives for 200 cameras attached to one media server.)  Unless you need the backup archive functionality, you may wish to consider using both of your 4RU servers to record video, configuring 100 cameras on each server.

I hope that helps,

Can I configure one camera on two VSMs? I know VSM doesn't support failover. My purpose is to use 2nd VSM to access the camera at time 1st VSM is failing.

I did a test myself. It's seems to be OK to configure a camera on two VSMs. Not sure this will cause any potential problem?

Thanks,

Oliver
