Cisco 831 router hard rest

Good day,

I have a Cisco 831 router.

I do not know how it has been configured, what the IP is and what the username and password might be.

How do I go about resetting the unit back to default so I can try and access it using the default IP and username.password?

Regards James

Hi Seb,

Thanks for the response.

I am struggling:
- Using Putty and a USB to Serial converter I bought earlier today.

- Converter seems to have loaded correctly

- I think Putty is configured correctly

- Putty opens COM6 successfully

- I CANNOT get the router to go into ROMMON mode. Pressing "CTRL-Pause/Break" or "Pause/Break" or "Fn+Break" and every other combination on keyboard does nothing, and using Putty "Special Command/Break"also does nothing....

Hi there,

If putty is not working, then your next course of action should be to try another terminal emulator. I think hyperterminal is still bundled with windows.

I did come across this post:

https://community.cisco.com/t5/switching/ctrl-break-doesn-t-work-cannot-boot-on-rommon/m-p/774169/highlight/true#M435715

...it is not a method I have ever heard of, but might just work. Let us know!

cheers,

Seb.
