Intermittent DNS resolution errors with RV082

Hello,

RV082 8 port dual-wan router

I have been using this router for a little over a year.  During the past several weeks I have experienced problems navigating to websites.  I get 'page not found errors'.  In a few cases I received 'certificate error messages' when there was in fact no certificate error.

I have access to a second internet connection and when I use that path the pages load just fine.  The problem does not exist for all URLs, and sometimes the same URLs are OK, sometimes they are not.

My ISP went through a test with me where we connected my PC directly to the modem and there were no problems.  When I returned back to going through the RV082, the problem returned.

After the ISP confirmed their DNS servers are functioning OK, I did a power off-on cycle and the problem seemed to retreat, but then on one occasion yet again today, the problem returned.

So I'm first trying to describe my problem in the hope someone will recognize it and have some advice for me.  Any links to articles relating to the problem are fine as well.

The network has had 2 changes in recent weeks.  One, the ISP assigned IP address changed, two, the servers on the network are being reconfigured.  But this problem exists just going straight to the RV082 as the Preferred DNS server.

Thanks.

Mr. WbcAlanLee,

I am sorry you are experiencing this issue.  I would recommended under your DHCP server settings to set the DNS for your primary as either your ISPs DNS servers or primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4.

Another option you may need to look into as it sounds like you are load balancing on the router is to check if the web sites you are going to are https?  If the router is load balancing it could be sending Acknowledgement packets out the other WAN and it is not allowing it to resolve/connect.

You may need to protocol bind https(443) to go out WAN1 or WAN2 only for proper negotiations.

Hope this helps,

Michael D.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your response.

Although I have a dual WAN router, I am currently only using a single WAN.

I will attempt to change the DNS servers in the router and observe and get back to this posting.

Hello WbcAlanLee,

Thank you for the update, I look forward to the next update.

Regards,

Michael D.

Hi Michael,

After I manually assigned my ISP's DNS server addresses in the router's DNS server IP settings the intermittent DNS resolution errors seem to have been fixed.

Although I didn't mention it, I have 2 Cisco routers in series, so I set the ISP DNS addresses in both routers.

Thanks for your help.

Best Regards,

Alan
