network service detection - Remote Host ip address recommendation - Dual Wan RV042 Router

Hey there!  I've been running these Dual WAN RV042 routers on my WAN for years.  And, I wanted to see if I could get a better understanding on choosing the settings available.  In the settings are for Dual WAN configuration, there are four check boxes.

1.  Default Host:

2.  ISP Host:

3.  Remote Host:

4.  DNS Lookup Host:

in my general practice, I would only configure the second one ISP host with my internet providers DNS ip address.  But, I've found that after some time those ip addresses will no longer be valid.  So, at the moment, I have the ISP host ip address configured to google's ip address when I ping it from my workstation.  Can anyone offer further recommendations as a standard?  What happens if I configure the remote host too?  how does the router behave if one of those two fails but the other continues to ping?

I'd just like to further understand these configurations for training my staff in the future.  Any tips or advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

From what I've been able to gather over the years is that anything you put in the first three is pinged, while the last will have a dns lookup performed.  When any of these tests fail the connection will be considered failed.

I found that just putting yahoo or google in the dns lookup seems to work best.  IPs change, have their own issues and whatnot causing the WAN to be in a failed condition even when it is not.
