Hello Everyone!
I'm having the same problem as other users with two new RV180, using the latest official firmware.
I use a site-to-site VPN between the two and it's working ok (that was the main reason to buy two RV180), I also use port forwarding and it's working. The problem is that attempting to load web pages will often result in only half the content being loaded, the browser loading spins and spins forever. Stopping the page loading and reattempting the load will work, even though sometimes you need to do that multiple times to get everything to load. This problem happens in all computers behind the router, I don't believe both routers are malfunctioning.
I tried do disable all Firewall Attacking Prevention but didn't work. Resetting the router to factory defaults and using the factory settings doesn’t work also.
I did a WAN capture packet using the diagnostics and opening the pkt.cap in Wireshark shows lots of:
"TCP 60 [TCP ACKed unseen segment] [TCP Previous segment not captured] https > 50069 [FIN, ACK] Seq=1074 Ack=1013 Win=16768 Len=0"
I don't know what it means but I suppose something is not right.
Thanks in advance,
Bruno

Thank you for using our forum, my name is Johnnatan I am part of the Small business Support community. I apologize for this issue, I am glad to assist you, I advise you to verify if both sides are in full duplex, to ensure both connections are sending and received packages at the same time. There are several reasons for a slow connection behind the router. Before you troubleshoot the RV wired router, attempt the next basic steps to see if the problem is solved.
Step 1. Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to verify the bandwidth capabilities of your connection.
Step 2. Check if the LAN cards of the devices attached to the network are working properly.
Step 3. Perform connectivity tests such as DNS lookup and Ping. See Connectivity Diagnostic Test On RV016 RV042 RV042G RV082 VPN Routers.
Step 3. Run antivirus programs to detect any spyware/malware or viruses that might slow the speed of your network.
Step 4. Once you determine that all the components in the network are working properly, but the slow connection persists, you have to manually setup the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) size on the RV wired router.
The MTU function is to set the parameters for maximum data transmission. This value must be set accordingly to the network topology, in order to take full advantage of the bandwidth available. To Enable MTU manually, first contact your ISP to find out the proper MTU size. The next steps will guide through the implementation of MTU on the RV Wired Routers Series.
Step6. if the problem persists I advise you change the security parameters, a little bit more simple, if the issue still the same you can erase the VPN and configure again from the beginning.
Step 7. Also check if both routers are in full duplex and let the firewall as default settings except for port forwarding exceptions and uncheck block WAN request and permit Remote Management.
I hope you find this answer useful.

Thanks for the advice but...
Step 1. Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to verify the bandwidth capabilities of your connection.
- My bandwidth is fine, I can get all the subscribed speed from my ISP.
Step 2. Check if the LAN cards of the devices attached to the network are working properly.
- This happens in all computers, I tried to only use one computer connected to the router and the problem persists.
Step 3. Perform connectivity tests such as DNS lookup and Ping.
- All the connectivity tests work fine.
Step 4. Run antivirus programs to detect any spyware/malware or viruses that might slow the speed of your network.
- I have done that, but we don't have slow speed in our network.
Step 5. Once you determine that all the components in the network are working properly, but the slow connection persists, you have to manually setup the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) size on the RV wired router.
- I already tried that, lowering the MTU value but that didn't work also.
Step 6. If the problem persists I advise you change the security parameters, a little bit more simple, if the issue still the same you can erase the VPN and configure again from the beginning.
- I deactivated all the firewall attack prevention settings but that didn't work either. I already tried to reset the router to it's factory defaults connected just one port to a computer and I have the same problem.
Step 7. Also check if both routers are in full duplex and let the firewall as default settings except for port forwarding exceptions and uncheck block WAN request and permit Remote Management.
- Both routers are in full duplex mode, I already deselected all firewall attack prevention settings and enabled the ping response on wan, and enabled remote management but same symptoms, sometimes pages load fine other times the browser keeps waiting and waiting and the page isn’t loaded I have to it stop and refresh.
More suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Bruno,
It sounds like a MTU issue for sure. Johnnatan nailed a couple of the other issues it could be though with setting the port speeds manually.
The default MTU size is 1500. Normally that is used for a cable connection and 1492 is mostly used for DSL but this is not always the case with some ISP's. Best way to test your packet size is to open up a command prompt and run this command ping www.google.com -f -l xxxx. The x's you would put the packet size in. You will keep running this command until you start getting replies instead of it stating that the packets needs to be fragmented. So what you do is reduce the packet size by 10 intervals. You can usually do these tests behind your router but its best to do these tests being plugged directly into the modem.
Once you find a good packet size you will configure this in the wan settings.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks,
Clayton Sill

Hi Clayton,
My Internet is provided by cable, I have a 30 Mbps Download and 3 Mbps Upload connection. The connection speed is fine http://www.speedtest.net/result/2519817534.png
I tried to adjust the MTU and using www.google.com as server I get replies at a value of 1472. This was done with a computer connected directly to the cable modem. Then I put this value into the router, but the problem persists.
What is strange, is that when lowering the MTU value and then do the ping test again with a value of 1472 I get no reply and have to lower the value again, don't know if it's normal to behave like that.
Thanks.

Clyton's solution doesn't work and it istn't exactly right.
Calculating MTU size you should follow Clayton's steps - pinging from behind of modem (the first part is ok), but then you should add 28 to value you've found (28 bytes reserved for header).
Having the same issue that Bruno is writing, setting proper MTU doesn't work. I checked ping with various packet size - measured 1472 (+28). So as I suppose in my case it was default value: 1500 and I am still using this MTU size and still getting connection problems.
I did a service request to Cisco SMB support but currently no solution - waiting for L2 escalation, don't know how long may it take.
Somebody got an answer/solution/workaround from them??
I've heard something about beta firmware for this device solving different issue with port forwarding - I think i I've met too (forwarded 21 port FTP connection dropping).
Also I encountered another issue with bandwidth negotiation between rv180 and LAN connected device. It works fine (1Gb) with Intel S1200BTL Motherboard built-in ethernet and Dell Latitude 5430 laptop built-in ethernet but after connecting:
- Dell Inspiron n5110 laptop with 10/100 ethernet
- desktop PC with Asus P8P67 Motherboard and 10/100/1000 ethernet
it negotiates 10Mb (sic!), setting manually 100Mb FullDuplex - no connection, setting manually 100Mb HalfDuplex - it works. Double checked cables, all class 5e or 6.
Both are working fine with full bandwidth (FullDuplex) connected to old Cisco Catalyst 2900XL and any other device I tried.
I'm thinking about returning RV180 to reseller and I'm completely disappointed with this device by now.

I'm giving up on this router, the router really have serious issues. I tried to put the router behind another router, D-Link DIR-655, DMZ LAN port on the DIR-655 to WAN port on the RV180, to see if the problem was the connection with my ISP, but no joy, the timeout problems with some websites persists only on the computers behind RV180, computers connected to the DIR-655 open all webpages just fine. I'm so furious with this situation because I bought two of these devices and they are junk, now I understand why RV042 with lower specs costs more than the RV180. The devices have more than 15 days and I can’t return them

Hi Uldis,
I have a couple of question for you:
How many devices are you using? How are they connected?
Could yo send us a picture of your topology?
How many devices are doing Nat?
Do you have many subnets in your LAN?
Greetings.

Hi Johnnatan,
1. 2 devices- ASA5505 and RV180. They are connected through VPN IPSec.
2. The picture is the simpliest two devices straight connected, 1 LAN to each site- 192.168.0.0/24 ASA site and 192.168.1.0/24 RV180 LAN1 site.
3. NAT is only on RV180, as described in post.
4. On RV180 we have 2 subnet- the first is VPN local subnet (10.10.10.0/24) and second is LAN1 subnet- 192.168.1.0/24. NAT is between theese 2 subnets: from 192.168.1.2 (host-PC) to 10.10.10.2 (the address from VPN local subnet range). The packets go through VPN with src 10.10.10.2.
If it could be useful, I can send you RV180 config files and pcap files.

Hi Johnnatan,
I tried to contact the small business contact support center, I'm from Portugal the engineer only speaks in English, I can write in English but speaking is a bit more difficult. I tried also the online chat support, but it was useless, the engineer said it was the MTU, I explained that it wasn't, asked me an website example that was giving timeout problems, he tried on the RV180 Lab router and said it was fine. Off course it was the problem is my router not the website.
I tried the online chat a few more times but now no one speaks to me.
My RV180 routers are now in a box waiting for a miracle (new firmware). Bought two RV042 to solve my problem, didn't had another option.

Hi Bruno,
I'm sure that the problem is your router... and my router and routers from the others.
I precisely checked proper MTU for me and it Was 1500, so it is no reason. I checked everything but problem still exists.
I contacted SBCS and they they've opened SR for me. After 3 days of mailing, sending requested data (configuration, packet captures...) and calling them, today I received beta firmware (version 1.0.2.3).
Unfortunately after about 15 minutes of testing I see that there's no difference. Connection problem still exists.
Earlier today I heard from one of SBCS engineers that my case was escalated to L2 but then I've received above beta firmware from my case owner from.... India. I'm pretty sure he's not from L2 support.
Shame on you Cisco!

The same issue here. I purchased an Apple Airport Extreme - works. I had a Linksys router, then a RV180. I am disappointed by cisco routers.
