I bought a new RV220W router recently. We have a network storage NAS 200 in our office that should be reached by 5-6 remote clients through the Internet (partly from behind simple routers having no VPN facility, partly from mobile network). I had solved it with FTP connection, but I decided to replace it by a more secure VPN connection. I am not an expert, only a user with certain experiences. We have never had VPN earlier, therefore I have no practice in this field.
I could set up network, WAN, LAN, VLAN are working properly, I could configure also firewall rules to allow FTP connection. So we have all the same features that we had with our previous D-Link 655 router. However I am unable to configure VPN connection. I did everything according to admin guide, but no success.
As a trial I installed Quick VPN client software on my old notebook and connected it to the Internet via an USB mobile network modem (to make my notebook as a remote client). I configured the same Name and Password on the Quick VPN client software that I did on the router.
When I registered my notebook as an IPSec user on the router, the router changed its LAN IP address range from the original 192.168.1.1-254 to 10.xy.xy.1-254. I was rather astonished about that because (as I know) the IP addresses starting with 10 are global IP addresses and not local ones. Is it not dangerous to have global IP address range on my LAN ? Anyhow I did all the necessary changes, but no success in creating VPN connection.
In addition to that I found that VPN Policy registered in the router can block data traffic between WAN and LAN. At certain times when VPN Policy is in action (I think so, but I am not sure about it) Internet connection is lost on all devices connected to LAN and VLAN. If I disable VPN Policy or delete it, Internet connection returns. IKE Policy has not such effect.
After several trials I have no other solution but to request your kind help.
I am sending you 5 pictures about the configurations that I made on the router. Please check what is wrong, what should be done to create VPN connection.
I have WIndows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3 on both my desktop computer and my notebook.
Many thanks in advance.
