WRV200 in Router Operation Mode

My current configuration is a AM200 configured in gateway operation mode which is responsible for establishing my internet connection via PPPOE (IP-192.168.253.1). This works no problem if I connect a PC to this setup. Now I add my WRV200 to the configuration, by connection the WRV200’s WAN port to the Ethernet Port in the AM200. I configure the WAN interface on the WRV200 as a fixed IP with the address of 192.168.253.2. The LAN on the WRV200 is then configured as 192.168.254.1. All of this works if the WRV200 runs in gateway mode. Since this creates a double NAT I wanted to change the WRV200 to run in router mode. Once I make this change (and added a static route on the AM200 for the 192.168.254.0 network) all the networks can see each other and I can ping the internet no problem, except that nothing else works to the internet, browsing SMTP etc. Change it back to gateway and everything works.

Surely this must be possible on the WRV200, I’m a certified Cisco engineer so I know how IP worksJ. Please advise on how this configuration can be achieved.

Basically I want the am200 to run as a gateway, the wrv200 as a router and vpn server. The reason why I want connectivity to the am200 is so that I can manage it via SNMP and the web interface.

We have looked at you configuration and we are unable to find  any issues with the WRV200 router. We would  recommend to call our customer service center to get more help, they may ask you  to get some configuration on your routers  and some capture files.

I have the same issue.

The problem has appeared after firmware upgrade to version 1.0.39. Now my router works fine in gateway mode, but I can't establish any external connection in router mode.

My configuration:
PC -> WRV200 -> Linux router -> Internet

I can ping Internet in router mode, I can connect to Linux router, but neither UDP nor TCP transit packets destined to external networks achieve Linux router. However, networks which are set at "Advanced Routing - Static Routing" are fully accessible. It seems that the "Default Route" exists only for icmp packets in router mode. :-)

Hi Emil,

If you can ping to the internet even with the WRV200 as Router Mode, we don't  see any issue with WRV200,  this it might be related to the other router

1. The problem had appeared after firmware upgrade, configuration of another router hadn't been changed.
2. I'll try to describe this issue by using such an example. Let WRV200 has external address 192.168.1.2. Another router has address 192.168.1.1. I set 192.168.1.1 as a "default gateway" in WRV200. And I see this default route at "Advanced routing"-"Show routing table". But if I try to connect to 10.0.0.1 I'll fail. However, I can ping 10.0.0.1. Then I do such an odd and unneeded operation - I add 10.0.0.0/8 network with 192.168.1.1 as gateway at "Advanced Routing - Static routing", and this configuration begins to work. That's why I start to think that WRV200's "default route" works only for icmp in Router mode, for example.
3. I tested WRV200 with other routers and had the same issue in Router mode. I tried another router instead of WRV200 - and this another router works fine.

Can you tell us what f/w ver. you were running on the WRV200 before ?

Hi, any news?
I have same issue. ICMP packet are routed well but TCP or UDP packets are blocked when operating in route mode. Firmware version: 1.0.39
