I searched for this thing several times and apparently couldn't come up with the right search terms.

Happy Holidays!

Dear Friend,

In MPLS, a No of customers might be terminating on same PE router & running BGP with ISP backbone. These customers may be using same private IP address within their organisations. To make each customers IP add unique, a 64bit address is added to 32 bit existing IP address. This combination is called route-distinguisher & is 96bit in length.

Route-target is again a 64bit identifier that uniquely identifies each customer VPN.

This is very short explanation. details can go up to a few pages.
