1700 series router to 2811 series router: Going from T1 to Ethernet

I  have not done much with business routers, but we have a 1700 series  with a WAN WIC-1ENET card with a RJ45 connection. We had a T1 line and  will be moving to ehternet. We are going to be moving to a 20MB line,  and i just wanted to make sure I have the right connections before  installing.

We also have a T1 line in another loaton and would be moving to this same 2811 router there as well.

We  would also like to copy over the configuration from 1700 series router  to the 2811 router. Would it be easier to do it by hyper-terminal? If  not what is your suggestion?

Also if we keep the 1700 routers are they capable of using layer-3?

Thank you again for your time.

Hello Troy,

>> WAN WIC-1ENET

this may be giving you only an ethernet = 10 Mbps

to use a 20Mbps link you should probably connect to an FE in the C2811

>> We  would also like to copy over the configuration from 1700 series router  to the 2811 router

interface naming is different so you cannot copy and paste between the two you need to EDIT the configuration file  I would suggest to configure the new router step by step.

>> Also if we keep the 1700 routers are they capable of using layer-3?

they are routers so they are able to route, the question may be the performance see first point

Hope to help

If you can, use Putty or SecureCRT. Putty is free.  Copy the commands from the 1700 to a notepad, make the necessary changes, then copy from the notepad to the 2800. Some commands may be different form one IOS to another, so watch for error messages.

Yes, the 1700 is a router and therfore it is a layer-3 device

Good Luck

Reza
