I thought this router might be pegging the memory on bootup, as it appears to keep freezing immediately after a message "...ISAKMP is OFF." However, today when I tried it again it stuck at that part, but I replugged in the serial cables to router 2 and 3 and got a message from one of the serials interfaces. I have marked the line that it stops responding on, sorry for the long output but wanted to include everything from decompress to the stall:

As you can see I waited about 12 minutes before I plugged the cables in, just to see if it would eventually bring up the enable prompt, and was surprised when it did respond to a serial face being brought up. Does anyone have an idea of what would be causing the enable prompt not to be appearing, but the router still responds to interfaces being connected - and more importantly how to fix this issue? I am using extraPutty and have no problem getting a respond from the other 2 routers and 3 switches with putty via the console port.
This is a new lab that I am really hurting without the third router, any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi David,
Can you still try using a different terminal emulator? I have seen PuTTY freezing very often in such a way that it continues to display what the router writes out to the console, but it does not carry any keystrokes back to the router. Try using HyperTerminal, SecureCRT or Tera Term 4.79.
If this does not help, would the router respond if you connected to the AUX port instead of the console?
Alternatively, would the router be responding normally if you were connected to the console port, restarted the router and during the IOS loading and decompression, sent a Break sequence to enter the ROMMON?
Best regards,
Peter

Hey Paul,
Thank you so much for the quick reply, but check it out:

--- System Configuration Dialog ---
Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
Success!
Upon seeing the line protocol remain up/up I plugged into the router I previously write/erase'd to start my labs over, and was able to configure the other end of the serial with an IP and telnet into the affected router and write / erase it to resolve
I will definitely try some of those other emulator's, as that was incredibly frustrating, I am so glad I tried that serial cable and was able to work around a fix!
Thank you again! I'm still curious to know if anyone else has seen that before and knows if there might be any other cause in case I run into that again.
Thanks again Paul and everyone else who takes the time to read this!

Hi David,
It's Peter but never mind - I get mistaken for Paul here on CSC quite often (I wonder why )
It's good to hear you have found your way around the problem, and it's quite an ingenious approach! I wonder if the configuration you had stored on the router contained anything like no exec in the line con 0 configuration that would cause the behavior you've experienced.
Anyway, I am glad you got this issue solved. Thank you for sharing the solution with us!
Best regards,
Peter

One of my first configs on lab routers is no exec-timeouts and passwords on both con and vty lines so that is a good possibility. In this case that vty config potentially saved me a lot of headache. Thank you also for the kudos on the fix, troubleshooting issues is fun, and really grewt when you get it :)
Thanks again for the input, Peter! :) Hopefully someone else can chime in with a similar break/fix for this particular issue.

I had Putty freeze at the same point.
I had to use Minicom in Linux to get a working connection.
