7200 ok to learn about 7500 ?

Hi,

Our company is planning to purchase a couple of 7500 series routers to replace 3600 and 3800 routers currently in place, and also purchase some core switches (no model decided yet).

My experience with Cisco has been on the low-medium range, from 800,1600,1700,2600,3600,4700 and 3800, with a dozen of these in my homelab purchased from ebay. I have read about the 7200/7500, but never played with one.

I'd like to buy a used 7200 (or even 7500?) on ebay to become more familiar with these higher-end models before we start our project.

Does it make sense to use a 7200 to learn about operating a 7500, or are they too different ?

What used router model and cards should I try to get to have a basic useful lab setup, and any pitfalls to avoid (like incompatible cards, IOS version, etc.) ?

What about the core switches. Could I get a cheap Catalyst with only the most basic cards ?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Max P.
