Hello.
I have 6 819s that were working in the last few weeks. All six now show the exact same issue, so I'm sure there has to be a Cisco fix or a Provider fix. We don't get that kind of localized failure otherwise.
All of the routers are returned to me with SIM cards intact, configuration exactly as I left it, but not showing anything for the cellular interface. Here is an example:
#sh cell 0 all

I get this on all 6. 2 months ago, I had a similar issue, but just leaving it on my desk running, it eventually reconnected.
Any ideas? We don't keep smartnet on these as the cost is nearly half that of a new 819, so I can't contact TAC. I have a call into Verizon to see if its APN or tower connection related. All help is appreciated.

hi,
it's odd all 6 routers' 4G WAN links went down. i suspect a provider issue.
could you post the WHOLE output of show cell 0 all from one of the router.

My thoughts exactly on the strangeness....So another thing that is bugging me. One suggestion I received from a colleague was that maybe the SIM went bad. I replaced a single SIM, activated it, and I'm getting the same issue from that router as well.
Here is the output you asked for...
#sh cell 0 all

hi,
the output shows there's no 4G/LTE service.
does the SIM card/data works on a smartphone? is there data capping or its limit already reached?
are the 6 routers within the same area? check with provider if there's any coverage.

I was given an answer, but never felt like it was resolved.
According to Cisco TAC, something in the older IOS version I was running allowed the GPS unit to overwrite the location so much it caused a modem failure. Essentially bricking the modems in all of them. I was told the modem was not a part that could be replaced (which is questionable if you've ever opened an 819), so i had to RMA for new routers.
I was given a specific IOS that was supposedly stable and told to upgrade. I have only had one go bad since then, and the working theory is that it was already bad when i upgraded it.
I can post the IOS version tomorrow when I return to work.
Hope that helps. Its not reassuring. Or at least it didn't reassure me.

Thanks a lot. I actually opened one of my 819s to check in fact if I could replace the modem and you can actually do it.
We have some routers running 15.2(4)M2 and some running 15.3(3M).
The ones that have gone bad are mostly on 15.3, but we have about 30 routers running that code and until now have not failed (a little bit over 3 years online), so the theory that Cisco gave you is a bit sketchy to say the least.
So at this point I am not sure if I should try to find a modem that will work with these or get new routers since they are no longer supported or under contract.
Please let me know about the IOS that was given to you as not being affected.
Thanks.

Thanks Wireman, I would definitely look into this as a possible fix.

Good morning buglovin1967, did you had a chance to look at the stable version for the IOS? I know that the latest version for the 819 is 15.6(3)M2. I wonder if this version should be ok.
Thank you.

Good morning buglovin1967,
Did you ever resolved your issue? I am also getting the same symptoms from a bunch of our 819s. We just purchased a new unit and when I install any of these SIM cards it works on the new router, but I doubt that 6 of our routers went bad. Can it be a problem with the IOS or Firmware? I am just curious if you got it to work.
