ASR 1002-X 10 GE Port - Max Possible

AMAS
Level 1
Level 1

Good Day All,

We seek advice on the best possible CISCO ASR Router for a:

  • 20 Gbps setup with
  • 4*10 GE Ports
  • 2 *GE Ports (for LAN ….etc)
  • please see the attached

The ASR 1002-X can possibly serve our purpose.

Can I add 4 * 10 GE ports to the 1002-X?:

  • 4*10 GE Ports are required for:
    • 2*10 GE for OLT connectivity
    • 2*10GE for BGW diversity ( we have 2*BGW Routers)

If so, would this be a cost effective solution, considering the cost for the Line cards & licenses?

If not, please recommend a more suitable router/approach.

Note for the BGW, the ASR1001-X serves our purpose.

Thank you.

The ASR1001-X, with integrated ESP, can support up to 20 Gbps and the ASR1002-X can support up to 36 Gbps.
The question is this: Is the speed enough for the entire life of the chassis? There is no "wiggle room" for the ASR 1001-X if there will be a need for >20 Gbps.

Thank you Leo.

Yes, we are ok with 20 Gbps over the next 3 to 5 years.

Please see the attached architecture layout.

the 1001-X is sufficient for our BGW requirements, but not for our CORE routers requirements as it only has 2*10 GE Ports, we require 4*10 GE ports for our core routers, hence, why we are considering the 1002-X.

which raises the question, can the 1002-X support the 4*10 GE ports we require for our core routers (please see the attached architecture), and if so, does it make commercial sense?

I believe the ASR 1002-X already has 3 x SFP+ ports. In order to get the 4th 10 Gbps port, you may need to get a SPA-1X10GE-WL-V2.

Just wondering, as you mention a "core" router, and all this 10g capacity, have you also considered L3 switches?
