ASR or 3945 for bgp

We currently have a 1gbps pipe on our wan with our ISP, we are looking to get 1 100mb pipe for a secondary isp for multihoming bgp for failover purposes.  normally I would go with the 3945 router, however its throughput is capped at 502mb.  I know the ASR (more specifically the 1001) is decently priced and they can handle over 1gb throughput but I do not know much about them and how well they can handle bgp.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hello Mercdecember,

if you can pay the price the ASR 1001 is superior to C3945 both in the forwarding plane and in the signalling plane.

ASR 1001 comes with 4 GB RAM memory and would support up to 4 million of IPv4 routes.

ASR 1000 are also used as Route Reflector servers in SP networks as they can support additional RAM ( up to 16 GB)

see ASR 1000 datasheet

Hope to help

the 3945 router, however its throughput is capped at 502mb.

This is the non-E variant?

If so, the 502 Mbps is figured as a theorical maximum for minimum size packets.  Cisco also rates this platform at 8 Gbps for 1500 byte Ethernet packets.  "Normal" production performance, would be somewhere in between the two.

The 3945E, BTW, for minimum size Ethernet packets, is rated with a PPS almost 3x faster.

The ASR 1000 series, performance wise, starts where the 3945E tops out.

PS:

If you have gig link now, and are only adding another 10% link, you could look at your current loading and platform.  The primary additional load would be from dealing with two copies of the Internet routing table, which, with enough RAM, should be also doable on a 3945.
