Avoid asymmetric routing using OSPF

Hello

I am running OSPF over WAN within hub and spoke type topology having primary and secondary links in data center and branches. Currently OSPF cost is different on primary and secondary links. I want to utilize also my backup links for some selective traffic but not interested in doing OSPF equal cost load balancing due to possible asymmetric routing. Could anyone please suggest any idea. Ofcourse I need to know something which would also ensure automatic failover to primary link in case backup link would be unavailable.

I was thinking of using SLA tracking on branch side for traffic destined to certain servers in main data center. But what about the traffic returning from data center? How would I ensure that it should follow the same path?

Thanks in advance for taking time to answer this.

  1. Ditch OSPF and use EIGRP.  Then you can set metrics per route, rather than per interface.
  2. Or use policy based routing to set the next hop IP address.
