Backup Routing

Hello All

I have 2 2811 routers connected to each other via leased lines.

In Router1 ; I have

Serial 1 with .2 connected to Router 2 Serial 1 with .3 ip address

Serial 2 with .5 connected to Router 2 serial 2 with .6 ip address

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.3 on router1

Question is ..definion of backup situaton

1.On both sides where should I puy backup interface command

2.Should I add another route for backup situation

like ;

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.6 200 (with weight)

Using the backup interface command makes it more complex than it needs to be. You should get very satisfactory backup routing by configuring a second static route with the higher Administrative Distance (like your second option).

one of things I like to do is use equal wieght static routes. This will allow for load sharing and if one goes down the other will still be active. If you only want to use one line at a time use the ip route statement with the weight.
