BGP MED With Redistribution

Hi,

I have redistributed RIP into BGP. Also, I have set a default metric = 55 for the BGP.

I faced a strange behaviour. All the RIP learned routes are redistributed into BGP with metric = 55.

Besides these the subnets of those connected interfaces are also redistributed into BGP on which RIP is enabled. However, these interfaces do not take the metric = 55. Rather these are added into BGP Table with a metric = 0 .

Can someone please explain this behaviour ???

This is the way redistribution works.

All RIP learned routes are redistributed with the metric you have specified.

But the redistribution process also looks at the connected interfaces where RIP is enabled.

These are redistributed as well but as they are are not RIP-learned, a metric of 0 is used instead.

Also, the behavior would be the same if you were using EIGRP or OSPF.

regards,

Leo

Hi,

The routes local(connected) to the router when redistributed or using network command into the BGP process will have a metric 0. However if you want to change the metric for them as well then you can create a route-map and assign to the "redistribute connected route-map under the router bgp instance.
