C-NIM-X port numbering on C8300-1N1S-6T

Hi guys, does anybody know what would be the slot bay numbers for NIM1? the onboard ones are all 0/0/X

C-NIM-X will take its pace in NIM1 slot.

NIM1 would it be 0/1/X or 1/0/X or 1/1/X? Cisco has confusing way of presenting the details.

hello @Spawn and great question man. SHORT ANSWER : The NIM1 slot is numbered 0/1/x

WHY , well:

  • 0= Chassis number (always 0 on single-chassis routers)
  • 1= Slot number (NIM1)
  • x= Port number on the NIM module

So if you install a module in NIM1, interfaces will be numbered like: 0/1/0, 0/1/1, etc. etc. Onboard ports stay as: 0/0/x

and of course, If u had a second NIM slot, it would be: 0/2/x....

if u need some links or docs, let me know, and hope it helps...

Hello @Spawn

According to the Catalyst 8300 Hardware Installation Guide, slot 0 is reserved for integrated ports and NIMs.

So, "user-installed" NIM occupy slot 1, meanning that any interfaces on a module in the NIM1 location appear as 0/1/X.

See here, "slot numbering" part:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/cloud_edge/c8300/hardware_installation/b-catalyst-8300-series-edge-platforms-hig/m-overview.html#con_1057273
