CHAP Applications

Hi,

In Cisco Router we usually use CHAP for PPP authentication, I understand it and able to see it in Wireshark.

I have seen some videos on the internet talks about authenticating iSCSI with CHAP, or HTTP with CHAP. Tried to find some wireshark capture, but could not.

is Chap embeded in these protocols? or they are using it as extra protocol like what we do in PPP.

thanks,

Hello Mohammed,

this is an interesting question.

CHAP Challenge handshake protocol is an authentication protocol with different flavors CHAP, MS CHAP v1, MS CHAP v2.

It can be used to authenticate access to resources like volumes in iSCSI

see the following links

https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1196995/html/GUID-3FC8A37A-FFCC-4070-A9F0-1B9B3FB79BF8.html

and

http://psonlinehelp.equallogic.com/V3.3/using_chap_to_control_iscsi_access_to_volumes.htm

I didn't find any occurrence of usage of CHAP with HTTP.

HTTPs does not used CHAP,

iSCSI can use CHAP for authentication. See it as an option the actual encapsulation of CHAP in the case of iSCSI is not explained in the above links.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
