This will not sync at all to ADSL with operating mode set to auto
It will not sync at all with ADSL2+ set as operating mode
It will sync with operating mode set to ADSL
This is on BT in the UK. I am running modem firmware 4.0.18. Any ideas? BT will not provide any support

Hi Paul,
ope you are doing fine! ADSL is not a valid operating mode; you can use Auto; itu-dmt; itu-ansi, adsl2; adsl2+.
You mentioning that AUTO doesn't work and it's kind of weird as AUTO goes through every other mode in succession, until it trains up. Although one explanation could be that the DSLAM is not giving any other option but the one with which the router trained up (DSLAM hardcoded to a single mode); generally these issues are related to compatibility problems between CPE and DSLAM. Let me make referencet to the following 2 documents:
ADSL over Basic Telephone Service-Annex M (HWIC-1ADSL-M)
• Supports ADSL over basic telephone service with Annex A ITU G. 992.1 (ADSL), G.992.3 (ADSL2), and G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
• Supports reach-extended ADSL2 standard (G.992.3) Annex L
• Supports Annex M (except UK Mask); Optimized for PSD mask M9, EU-64
• Complies with ANSI T1.413 issue 2
• Supports ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) services
• Supports ATM CoS features constant bit rate (CBR), non-real-time variable bit rate (VBR-nrt), real-time variable bit rate (VBR-rt), and unspecified bit rate (UBR)
• Supports up to 23 virtual circuits per HWIC
• Supports IP quality of service (QoS)
• Supports Dying Gasp function
• Has one RJ-11 ADSL interface
• Interoperates with third-party DSLAMs (See Tables 1 and 2)
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_4t/12_4t11/dsl_hwic.html
Router(config-if)# dsl operating-mode {ansi-dmt | auto | itu-dmt | adsl2 | adsl2+}
I hope the information is useful for you.
Cheers,
Yanil

The problem turned out to be the IOS. M4 did not allow sync at ADSL2+. M5 works fine
Operating mode was adsl2 in above post it was a typo
