Level 1

Hi i am an intern and pretty new to working with routers (mostly knowledge of basics)

I got a bunch of 4221 routers. When they were booted for the first time ever the routers requested an username and password: admin, admin. Then when trying to enter the conf t an message showed up saying command not supported. the ? option sayd there actually was an conf t option.  When logging out and trying to log in the admin account wasn't avaulable anymore. I have tried the cisco password recovery but that also didnt work.

I hope i have informed you enough

Thanks in advnace!

ps. sorry for bad english

1. Put a new binfile on a usb
2. Enter rommon mode
3. Boot de binfile van de usb
boot usb0:isr4200-universalk9_ias.16.12.04.SPA.bin (new bin file)

4. copy the binfile to the bootflash
Router# copy usb0:isr4200-universalk9_ias.16.12.04.SPA.bin bootflash: (new bin file)

5. This are the commands te verify and select the new binfile as standard boot
Router> enable
Router# verify flash:isr4200-universalk9_ias.16.12.04.SPA.bin (new bin file)
Router# config
Router(config)# no boot system bootflash:isr4200-umck9.16.10.3a.SPA.bin (old bin file)
Router(config)# boot system flash:isr4200-universalk9_ias.16.12.04.SPA.bin (new bin file)
Router(config)# exit
Router# write memory
Router# reload

The router should be fixed now.

Before going to configuration mode, were you able to go into "enable" mode?

Is the router loaded with SD-WAN firmware?

Yes i was able to enter the "enable" mode. How do i confirm the router uses SD-WAN firmware?

Post the complete output to the following command:

sh version

I cannot enter this command because i cannot enter the enable mode anymore. I was only able to enter this mode at the first boot ever of the device just as logging in. And in the ROMmon mode it says:

rommon 1 > show version
monitor: command "show" not found
rommon 2 > sh version
monitor: command "sh" not found

Console into the router and reboot the router.
Post the entire boot-up process.  We want to see what the router is (not) doing.

The router is loaded with SD-WAN firmware.

I may accidentally have made your comment a solution comment..

If you want to covert the router to load "non-SD-WAN" firmware then you'll need to do this:

  1. Go to the Cisco website and download an IOS that is not SD-WAN -- 16.12.4 is a good candidate.
  2. Put the IOS-XE file into a supported USB stick (format to FAT16)
  3. Force the router into ROMMON
  4. Force the router to boot the IOS found in the USB using the command "boot usb0:filename.bin"
  5. Once the router boots into regular IOS, copy the IOS-XE file into the router's bootflash using the command "copy usb0:filename.bin bootflash:".
  6. Unpack the IOS using the command
request platform software package expand switch all file flash:IOS_filename on-reboot verbos

7.  Make sure the boot variable string points to the "packages.conf" file.
8.  Do not forget to save the config.

9.  Reboot the router.

Hope this helps.

I dont have acces to an IOS download at the moment i will have to wait for it i will keep you up to date.

When trying this solution i get stuck at step 6 the command i run is:

Router#request platform software package expand switch all file flash: isr4200-umck9.16.10.3a.SPA.bin on-reboot verbos

This is the ouput of the command:

Router#$switch all file flash:isr4200-umck9.16.10.3a.SPA.bin on-reboot verbos
