Cisco CSR1000v IOS-XE Upgrade

hi,

i got a few CSR1000v that i need to upgrade from 3.16.5 to recommended code 16.12.5

can i upgrade these virtual routers just like a "normal" HW router (using .bin)? or do i deploy a new VM with the new code?

is there an upgrade path to follow 3.16.5 > 16.12.5 or can i jump straight to the new code?
