Hi
On GNS3 I'm creating a campus network to practice for CCNP. However, I'm using router images for the switches and is doing my head in, so thought on using proper L2 FREE Cisco images if there are any.
Which image would you recommend to manually create the templates on GNS3? where could I find it?
If I try to install an "appliance" on GNS3, which is apparently the recommended way, then I need to provide my own Cisco IOSvl2 images which are not free and apparently cant be used outside CML.
Any suggestion on the most effective way to aproach this and just get on with practising is more than welcome.

I would recommend for you to take a look in EVE. I believe you can get layer 2 switch there easily.

EVE-NG is free.
Why Eve-NG and not GNS3? because run Layer2 switch on GNS3 always had been a pain in the ****. In the past we used to have the module that you could add to the switch but it never worked properly.

First off all the question is ourside scope of this Forum, there are many google document provide you how to download images and use it what is best way platform works for you.
This is technical forum of cisco, not for the supply the Layer 2 images or sell here.
If you can able to spend some money like $200 for CML 2.7 all the images come with it, if not use cisco Cloud for CML you can practice the labs.
If you really keep to learn GNS2 and Layer 2 image, there are enough blog and URL in google provide how to do that.
I do not want to pay for any software
No one is selling here, this is community help each other, but i am sure google.com is free. If you can spend15min free time you get all you want.

Create a CCO login and download any Catalyst 9k switch firmware for free.

Yes, I would recommand free Eve-NG Or CML or GNS3 with real Cisco switches ! you can connect GNS3 virtual routers to real switches via NIC that supports vlan tagging, aka 802.1Q
