Cisco "default" frame relay encapsulation vs frame relay IETF RFC 1490 / RFC 2427 encapsulation

What's the difference in the encapsulation between these two methods? I know there's a "Cisco" HDLC and an ISO standard HDLC format, but I'm not sure if they are related.

ROUTER(config)#int s0/1/0
ROUTER(config-if)#

ROUTER(config-if)#encap ?
bstun Block Serial tunneling (BSTUN)
frame-relay Frame Relay networks
hdlc Serial HDLC synchronous
lapb LAPB (X.25 Level 2)
ppp Point-to-Point protocol
sdlc SDLC
sdlc-primary SDLC (primary)
sdlc-secondary SDLC (secondary)
smds Switched Megabit Data Service (SMDS)
stun Serial tunneling (STUN)
x25 X.25

ROUTER(config-if)#encap frame-relay ?
MFR Multilink Frame Relay bundle interface
ietf Use RFC1490/RFC2427 encapsulation
<cr>

ROUTER(config-if)#encap frame-relay iet ?

ROUTER(config-if)#encap frame-relay iet
