Classful only sends the network, not the the subnet mask (ie 4.0.0.0).
Classless does send the subnet mask along with the network ( ie 5.5.5.0 255.255.255.0)

As otherwise noted, the dfference is that a classless routing protocol carries the mask in the advert. one of the clearest comparisons is RIP V1 is classfull, RIP V2 is classless.
