We are replacing our Cisco 881 router with a Cisco 2901 router.  If I backup the configuration from the 881 and restore it to the 2901, will there be any problems? We just want our 2901 to work the same. Thanks.

so routers/switches etc can come with a basic image which may only allow certain features the devices come with these out of the box so they work .

You can purchase advanced ip services images or advanced security  images which will allow all features to work. As an example you cannot use  BGP or PBR unless you have an advanced image but you may be allowed to use RIP or EIGRP stub.

You can check whats running on your 881 with a show license it will tell you whats enabled

Do you have a switch that will be connecting to the 2901 ?

You could setup the 2901 port as a port with sub-interfaces set , 1 vlan for data and 1 for voice , this doc explains it below. You would set the switch side as a trunk to allow the vlans connect to the router

That your limited to 1 port you really need some form of a switch so your lan devices can connect to the

No the general config should work fine , just make sure if you have an advanced image on 1 you have an advanced image on the other or certain features may not work.

Saying that its obviously not going to be an exact copy the interfaces will be slight different but you can take the config section by section and apply it from the 881 to the 2901, the actual general global config should be the ok to transfer between routers

Hi Mark, thanks for your answer. Can you please explain what is an advanced image?

Should it both run on the same IOS? Thanks

Hi Mark,

Sorry to bother again. We set up two LAN ports on the 881 for our IP phones. We are upgrading our broadband and the ISP provider gave us this 2901 which only has 1 LAN port. Any ideas on how we can still get VOIP working? Thanks again.

yes but its not a smart switch :-(

yes it wouldnt have to be expensive switch but it would need to support trunking for multiple vlans for voice and data

if the port on 2901 is layer 2 you will be able to have 1 voice/pc on it with below config and link the pc into port on the back of the phone if its cisco but the fact your limited to 1 port without a switch thats capable of 2 vlans you could be stuck

interface FastEthernet0/11
 switchport access vlan x
 switchport mode access

 switchport voice vlan x
 mls qos trust dscp
 spanning-tree portfast
