CPU consumption trend and GRE Tunnel

Hi all,

I have a Cisco  WS-C3850-48T and I did a simple configuration with Tunnel and OSPF.

With this configuration I noted that CPU consumption is strict related to traffic that pass through GRE.

I read many posts and seems that is it a normal behavior, so is possibile improve CPU performance with this type of traffic ?

I mean, fast switching or other feature that can help.

Attached there are graphs that shown relationship between traffic that pass on Tunnel an CPU.

Thank you,

and merry Christmas

If the tunnel end-point is on the device, minimizing fragmentation often mitigates CPU consumption, but on a switch if GRE is not supported in hardware, you'll likely fine the CPU is a limiting factor (which on a multigig switch isn't [the CPU] all that powerful since most traffic forwarding is done by dedicated hardware).
