Device selection help

Hi,

I'm struggling with the Feature Navigator to find a suitable Cisco device, so I hope to get some help here.

Layer 2: In our installation a number of VLANs will arrive on a SFP trunked port. The RJ45 ports are assigned to different VLANs.
Layer 3: In each VLAN there must be a BGP client since each virtual LAN has completely independent and possibly overlapping subnets, routing etc. So, we probably need VRF and the "Per-VRF Assignment of BGP Router ID" feature. An additional VPN per VRF would be great.

So, the feature list of the device is:

  • 3 1GBit SFP ports, 2 of them with VLAN trunking
  • 16 1GBit RJ45 ports, each assigned to a VLAN
  • VRF on top of each VLAN
  • BGP client per VRF domain, i.e. the "Per-VRF Assignment of BGP Router ID" feature
  • firewall (just port blocks, no content filter)
  • VPN per VRF, if possible
  • scriptable configuration

For me, it's a bit tricky to map the platforms in the feature navigator to actual devices. The additional challenge is to find the cheapest device supporting these features.

Any advice how to proceed with device selection? Can anyone help with the specific request above?

Thanks.

Hi

Below you will find useful links:

https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/assets/prod/switches/cisco-switch-selector-how-to/index.html

https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/assets/prod/routers/cisco-router-selector/index.html

Once you have selected a device, verify the license type in order to see if that is aligned to your requeriments. Also you can compare the models of a platform serie.

Hope it is useful

:-)

I've tried the switch/router selector before but I had the impression that they do not cover all devices, i.e. that some devices will never be in the result set no matter what you select. Therefore, I don't trust these selectors...

Hi
A 3850 switch would do that the standard gig switches , even though you only need 16gbs I would still buy the 48 port as there is minimal difference in price to a 24 and then your future proofing it with extra ports , you can get a 4gb 1gb uplink sfp module with it
switches and routers can do basic firewalls functions I would not rely on them for full services but they all do acl blocking for just ports and some have zone based fws etc

You will need a full licences for BGP and VRFs ipservices which isn't cheap

My advice would be don't look at the feature navigator too much check the data sheets , see whats available on Cisco support in switches and routers then Google the platform name with data sheets , it will tell you exactly what it supports like below 3850 one

There are other options this is just one I can think will do what your asking above and there not that expensive since the 10gb units came out in comparison anyway

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems this fits well.

What about a 3650? I don't need StackPower.

What about a 9300? I've read that it's the successor of the 3850 and (currently?) it's cheaper than the 3850, even with the Networked Advantage pack. However, I'm not really sure how to integrate 3 fiber uplinks there since the C9300-NM-4G module seems to support copper only?

Hi

Cisco 3650 is similar to 3850 but I think it is pointing for access switches. Please check this link:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/switches/catalyst-3650-series-switches/models-comparison.html

Abount the C9300, this a recent switch model, it supports Fiber modules like 3650 and 3850, now if you are looking for a switch with more SFP ports you could use a C9500. They support multi gigaethernet ports.
