How to Design QoS for Campus to Branch MPLS WAN Network ?

Hi, Could someone share how to design QoS for an Enterprise MPLS network ? Where should we start; from LAN to WAN Campus to branches ? How to determine what classification should be done ? Though we roughly know the top talkers or services, how do we derive /classify the services or applications ? I suppose this question is more related to Engineering or Designing QoS solution for an Enterprise network ? Could someone share ideas or good guides here ? Thanks.

By the way, the MPLS network is managed by the carrier.

So QoS needs to be implemented starting from LAN  to Campus WAN to branches.

Reason, we are looking to implement QoS is few of our branch WAN links seems to be congested during business peak hours, due to several bandwidth savvy applications / services implemented for the period of last 3 years.

QoS is broad topic. Here are two guides to get you started. See below a QoS Design Guide:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/solutions/Enterprise/WAN_and_MAN/QoS_SRND/QoS-SRND-Book.html

See below the 12.4 QoS configuration guide.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/qos/configuration/guide/12_4/qos_12_4_book.html

When designing your QoS policy make sure that you get business sign off first as to which apps get which bandwidth guarantees. This can be a significant challenge if there are different competing business priorities within your organization.

However getting this sign off is worth the effort if at a later date people start complaining about sluggish performance for certain apps.

You also need to ensure that the QoS markings that you apply to the packets exiting your router are honored by the carrier. If not then they may mark them down to best effort thus negating your whole QoS policy.

Please remember to rate all posts that are helpful.

Thanks Sean for the reply.
