IP Transit

Hi all

I heard somebody talking about IP transit yesterday, Can anyone tell me in a nutshell exactly what it is ?

A big ISP, generally transnational. Traffic is transited over their Autonomous Systems.

why is it called this though? is it a certain technology ? i hear it gives the customer option to advertise there own networks ??

Just an industry term to facilitate talks like "when doing transit, disable sinchornization". Or, "unless you do transit, I won't peer with you"
