Hi Guys,

I have '

  • L3  network connected multiple locations through Radio links
  • all L3 devices are cisco 3850 IP base switches.
  • Need to expand multiple VLANs between three locations (need to use same subnet)

My question is with limited options What is the best method to do L2 expansion on this setup.

Hello @technerd81

Which device do you have on the other end?

Can you provide a simple draw with IP address information ?

-If I helped you somehow, please, rate it as useful.-

all devices (A,B0,B1,C0,C1 & D) are 3850 ipbase

VLAN 10 to be on site A and Site C

VLAN 1,2 & 3 needs to be on Site A and Site B

I suggest that you look into L2TPv3 as the best way to extend those vlans. This article has information that I hope you will find helpful.

Hi Richad
Seems to be 3850 does not support L2TPv3

A(config)#pseudowire-class TEST
A(config-pw-class)#en
A(config-pw-class)#encapsulation ?
mpls Use MPLS encapsulation
only MPLS available

I checked the Cisco Feature Navigator and it does appear that L2TPv3 is not supported on 3850. That is unfortunate since L2TPv3 would be the best solution for your requirements. With a routed link connecting the sites I am not sure what else would do what you want on a 3850.

Thank you Richard

Do your radio links support Ethernet hand-offs? If so, wondering whether you can VLAN trunk or MPLS tag across them. If you can, either might allow you to extend your VLANs.

(If the links are routed now, on a VLAN trunk, you can assign a new VLAN just to act as a L3 p2p link.)
