Hi
can anyone give me guidance on Multicast packet processing on 6509 with SUP720 ?
How it processed, like software queue or Hardware queue ?
What are the pors and cons for both ?

Hi Amol,
When you are having an unsupported config on router, you may see unexpected results. IOS is not designed to handle such config. You may see router crash as well.

I believe it's done within the hardware, with replication being done upon ingress, if possible. If done upon ingress it's possible such replication can overload the card's ingress to the chassis.

Hi Joseph,
Thank you for the answer, however i am seeing one unwanted logs on my device its 6509E device with SUP720.
"MLSM[2]: mlsm_process_pending_event ERROR in processing"
Could this be the cause for Hardware queue over utilization ?

Hi Amol,
Are you running MVPN extranet. You may see mentioned error in case of unsupported config.
If yes, please check if we are meeting below conditions to run MVPN extranet.
•The Multicast VPN Extranet Support feature only supports Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) sparse mode (PIM-SM) and Source Specific Multicast (SSM) traffic; PIM dense mode (PIM-DM) and bidirectional PIM (bidir-PIM) traffic are not supported.
•When configuring extranet MVPNs in a PIM-SM environment, the source and the rendezvous point (RP) must reside in the same site of the MVPN behind the same provider edge (PE) router.

Hi Akash,
Thank you for your input, this is what i have got from Cisco TAC.
My point here is that when I am having this kind of configuration, whats its implication on my device ? will it trigger any issue with memory on my device ?
