I am having trouble configuring the interfaces on a NIM-2GE-CU-SFP when using network boot (TFTP) to load the router configuration. The Cisco 4331 ISR router chassis interfaces accept their configuration via network boot (e.g., Gig 0/0/0), but the interfaces on the NIM-2GE-CU-SFP do not (e.g., Gig 0/1/0). I suspect this has something to do with the NIM interfaces being offline at boot time, and they reject configuration commands. Some console messages from early in the boot process:
*Sep 18 19:55:33.808: %SPA_OIR-6-OFFLINECARD: SPA (ISR4331-3x1GE) offline in subslot 0/0 *Sep 18 19:55:33.812: %SPA_OIR-6-OFFLINECARD: SPA (NIM-2GE-CU-SFP) offline in subslot 0/1 *Sep 18 19:55:34.075: %IOSXE_OIR-6-INSCARD: Card (fp) inserted in slot F0 *Sep 18 19:55:34.075: %IOSXE_OIR-6-ONLINECARD: Card (fp) online in slot F0 *Sep 18 19:55:34.163: %IOSXE_OIR-6-INSCARD: Card (cc) inserted in slot 0 *Sep 18 19:55:34.163: %IOSXE_OIR-6-ONLINECARD: Card (cc) online in slot 0 *Sep 18 19:55:34.403: %IOSXE_OIR-6-INSSPA: SPA inserted in subslot 0/0 *Sep 18 19:55:34.407: %IOSXE_OIR-6-INSSPA: SPA inserted in subslot 0/1 *Sep 18 19:55:40.931: %SPA_OIR-6-ONLINECARD: SPA (ISR4331-3x1GE) online in subslot 0/0 *Sep 18 19:55:41.576: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0, changed state to up |
(note: I am using Gig0 to reach the TFTP server on the management VLAN)
Then very late in the boot process I see:
*Sep 18 19:56:16.269: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1/0, changed state to down *Sep 18 19:56:16.278: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1/1, changed state to down *Sep 18 19:56:21.558: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1/0, changed state to up *Sep 18 19:56:21.567: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1/1, changed state to up |
After boot, I can paste the configurations for Gig 0/1/0 and 0/1/1 into the running configuration okay, but that rather misses the point.
I have attempted to jump-start these NIM Interfaces by adding these commands in my "naked startup-config" file kept in NVRAM:
interface GigabitEthernet0/1/0 no ip address no shutdown ! interface GigabitEthernet0/1/1 no ip address no shutdown |
but these interfaces still reject the configuration commands arriving via TFTP net boot.
Is there another trick that I might try, or must I resort to some hideous kludge?
