This port is set to negotation auto. Will it negotiate 100 Mbps if the other end is a FastEthernet interface? The NSE gig0 port will connect to a 7206 100M interface

No, it won't.
According to the Data Sheet:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps352/product_data_sheet0900aecd8060aa7a.html
This product only support these SFP GBICs:

So then why the "negotiation auto" on the interface configuration?

What's the point of having the speed option, if you are only allowed to have one speed?

Hello Carol,
speed isn't the only parameter that can be negotiated on a GE link: for example there is flow control.
the rule of thumb is the following: if the port uses GBICs of any type the speed is fixed to 1000 Mbps, if the port has its own RJ-45 connector it can be 10/100/1000.
Hope to help
