OS Upgrade?

I'm looking to upgrade the iOS on a Cisco 3640 to the last supported level, 12.4.25, and then see what I can make it do.

I'm understanding that the only way to acquire a legitimate copy of the appropriate iOS version is to pay for a service contract, even though I won't need any other service provided for it.

Is this correct?

Yes,

You will need a current SmartNet contract for that device in order to receive any legitimate IOS upgrades to it.

Even if I'm doing a "feature upgrade" with it?

The current version on the router is "c3640-i-mz.120-27.bin according to the show ver command.

The version I'm looking at for replacement is c3640-ik9s-mz.124-25d.bin which is an IP version with IPsec support.

You want to upgrade the IOS on a product that you own, you have to have a SmartNet contract to make that happen legally.... That is really all there is to it.
