Martin, Investing in SmartNet when you purchase a Cisco device helps when something like what you describe occurs. Keeping that device under SmartNet is a small price to pay over the lifetime of that device. And if something does go wrong then you have a course of action that gives you options and potentially will allow you to transfer a license to a new device if the old device should fail. SmartNet is money well spent over the course of time.

Whenever you purchase a Cisco product from a reseller, you should also get the service contract to go with it. They go hand in hand. Yes, you will need the service contract to get updates from Cisco. They install the current operating system at the time of the product manufacture. However, if the box sits on the shelf for a while updates may have taken place and they do not get automatically installed on shipped products. Cisco does provide current software for their products, the method of retreiving them is with the SmartNet contract. And, BTW if you wish to get signature files for that product that is a seperate SmartNet contract as well. It depends if you purchased the module that houses the signature files though.

Look over your DHCP pool configuration again. If you hold down the mode switch it will reload the switch but it will also erase the configuration in the process as well. Not sure that is what you want to do. Other than the reload command, a power reset(unplug from power & plug back in) will work as well but it is a bit more drastic selection.

Colin, You can go through the activation process on line and Cisco will send you the license file and then you can load them into the respective switches. You do not have to do the process on each instance of your switch.

Jerome, If you can, get a copy of Cisco IPS Manager Express (IME). I personally find that interface to be more user friendly then ASDM. Maybe it will work better for you. At least Cisco gave you a key, they could have said no, so that is a good thing. Maybe you can get a SmartNet contract for it and get the upgrade to Security+ through that avenue if you find you still need it.

You want to upgrade the IOS on a product that you own, you have to have a SmartNet contract to make that happen legally.... That is really all there is to it.

Greg, Do you have a discrete point-to-link between the two offices? A link that does not go to an ISP of any sort? Because if you are still going through some sort of an ISP then you are going over a public interface of some sort and as was stated above by Henrick, you cannot do that because of the rule about private IP space.

That is a bummer. I ordered the IPS NME K9 module along with a 2911 ISR last year. They make for a great combination within a small business environment at a reasonable cost. Once again, I am nuged in a direction to have to spend more money for a solution where current products fit the bill quite nicely. Such is the deal I suppose......
