Messages beginning with % are system messages.

I believe the "5" in your case is the severity level which would be notification.

The levels are below -

0 – emergency
1 – alert
2 – critical
3 – error
4 – warning
5 – notification
6 – informational
7 – debugging

I believe that Grant has it right. +5 for you.

Ok Grant, i can be agree with you here. But again in this such alert message "%LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: " now what is the 5 stands for.... is this only means notification on any such number of count.

This message (or event) is also classed as a severity 5. Cisco class this as a 'normal, but significant condition'

As an example from one of my own switches - Two of the messages are classed as Severity 4 (Warning) The other is a Severity 5 (Notification)

Perhaps you'll find this document helpful as well: Cisco System Messages

"SEVERITY is a single-digit code from 0 to 7 that reflects the severity of the condition. The lower the number, the more serious the situation. Table 1  lists the severity levels."
