OSPF is being received, can't ping

Hello,

It seems to me I am receiving OSPF hello packets, but I am unable to ping some devices, one log example below:

Jan 16 05:15:13: OSPF: Rcv hello from 10.82.x.x area 192.168.x.x from Vlan400 192.168.x.x

I have two vlans that had been operational for a year now and just fine until tonight.  Both are connected over MetroEthernet from my service provider.  Has anyone ever seen a situation where you receive the Hello packet but cannot ping the device on the other end.  Also, when I do a show sh ip ospf nei, I'm seeing the other two devices as neighbors, and I can see their ip address in the ospf database.  It's almost as if, traffic is only coming from the Metro connection, but not going out to it.

Thanks,

Will

Hi John,

Establishing ospf neighbor state is a two-way process. When a device is registered as a neighbor, you may assume there is at least some connectivity.

A bit more details in your post would help to determine the cause. What does your topology look like? What is the neigbor state? Between which addresses are you attempting to ping?

Also, there is nothing to gain by hiding part of a private address.

Please post the output from:

sh ip route

sh ip ospf nei

In general, OSPF neigbors are on directly connected subnets and it should at least be possible to ping between these. There is little else I can say about it with so little info as this would be mere guessing.

Leo
