OSPF not sending v6 default-route - Cant figure out why.

Hi Guys,

I have two routers , One in area0/1 and one in area1

The router in area1 doesnt seem to be getting a default route from the router in area0/1

RouterB ( A juniper E120 ) has a neighbor relationship and gets other routes but refuses to recieve a default..

Im a little stuck how to troubleshoot. Ive checked the config and other devices seem to get a default ::0 but this routerB refuses to ( Even though the configuration appears identicle? How can I verify that the cisco RouterA is indeed advertising a ipv6 default?

For simplicity..

Here is how its setup..

RouterB(Area1)--------------------------------RouterA(Area 0/1)--------> Net

RouterA has a default in its table.

sh ipv6 route ::/0

Routing entry for ::/0

Known via "ospf 7", distance 110, metric 2005

  Tag 7, type extern 1

... Etc

RouterA config:

ipv6 router ospf 7

log-adjacency-changes

auto-cost reference-bandwidth 100000

area 1 stub

default-information originate metric 2000 metric-type 1

passive-interface default

no passive-interface TenGigabitEthernet2/3

no passive-interface TenGigabitEthernet3/2

no passive-interface GigabitEthernet9/47

no passive-interface Port-channel3

no passive-interface Vlan200

Graham,

Well, it may be a glitch in Juniper's OSPF implementation - is it possible for you to restart the OSPF process on the RouterB, or perhaps restart the entire router?

Nevertheless, we may be dealing with some JUNOS specific behavior. What is the exact version? Although I am not acquainted with Juniper devices, this may be a good reason to start I may try to look up specifics about default routes in your JUNOS version.

Best regards,

Peter

Hi Graham,

Hey, we're meeting again

You have an interesting problem here. Just wondering: as the Area 1 is configured as stub, the default route should be injected into it by RouterA automatically, without actually needing the default-information originate command. Its presence should actually not influence the Area 1 at all, because it results in originating LSA-5 which is not allowed in stubby areas.

A couple of questions:

  • What does show ipv6 ospf neighbor command say on RouterB?
  • What does the show ipv6 ospf summary 0.0.0.0 say on both RouterB and RouterA?

Best regards,

Peter

Hey again

Im looking into a fairly badly implemented v6 network and its got some of the oddest problems ive never come across before

Anyway, Hope this helps?

RouterA ( Both routers connect to each other via a vlan interface )

Hello Graham,

Oh, I apologize about the typo in the command. It should read:

show ipv6 ospf database inter-area

Sorry! I'm still thinking too much IPv4...

Best regards,

Peter

Its ok the difference with v4 and v6 commands are slowly driving me insane.

Got a website? Need some live chat software?

Hello Graham,

Basically, I want to find out if the default route has been sent into the Area1 as LSA-3.

On a quick topology I've concocted to test OSPFv3, I see the following output on my wannabe-RouterB:

R3#show ipv6 ospf database inter-area prefix ::/0

OSPFv3 Router with ID (3.3.3.3) (Process ID 1)

Inter Area Prefix Link States (Area 1)

Routing Bit Set on this LSA

  LS age: 120

LS Type: Inter Area Prefix Links

  Link State ID: 2

  Advertising Router: 2.2.2.2

  LS Seq Number: 80000001

  Checksum: 0x5DD6

  Length: 28

  Metric: 1

  Prefix Address: ::

  Prefix Length: 0, Options: None

Using the same command on your RouterB, do you see any LSA referring to the ::/0 being present?

Best regards,

Peter

Annoyingly the routerb is a damn Juniper E120. So that command isnt available. I cant even find a similar one

Hi Graham,

Well, the LSA-3 containing the ::/0 seems definitely to be present there. Hmm, and what does the show ipv6 route or similar say? Is there really no default route present?

Best regards,

Peter

Yep, Its reallllly odd. Its as if the router is just deciing to not bother putting it into its routing table.

Heres the entire routing table for that router:

lon029#sh ipv6 route

Protocol/Route type codes:

  I1- ISIS level 1, I2- ISIS level2,

I- route type intra, IA- route type inter, E- route type external,

Peter

Yeah im thinking the same now.

Ive found that for some reason the route isnt advertising its ipv6 loopback address to the cisco P's either.

Yet we have other E120's that work fine ( Exactly same config )

Ive raised a tac case with juniper. I did think that maybe this router was playing up and I think this confirms it.

Always good when its not a cisco issue

Thanks again for your help. Its certainly good to know now that the router IS! getting the default ::/0 but just ignoring it.

Will see if I can restart the ospfv3 service. May just reload the whole damn thing lol.

Thanks again for your swift helpful support on this matter

Have a great day.

Hello Graham,

You are most welcome! Please keep me informed if anything new comes from Juniper that will actually help you solve this. I am interested in learning what was the root cause of this issue.

Once again, sorry for the typos in my recommended commands and for not being clear about my intention from the beginning. Anyway, it has been a pleasure!

Take care.

Best regards,

Peter
