"RAM disk" emulation

Is there any way to use the available memory of a Cisco router to create some sort of filesystem?  I'm thinking of situations when one needs to update the IOS of a remote device, but there's not enough flash space for both old and new images, transfer rate is slow and there is significant risk of power failures or reloads - "copy tftp: X:" then "copy X: flash:" (after deleting the old image) would minimize the risk of having the router restarted without a complete IOS image in its flash...

Right now I could use this for the 850 / 870 series, but I'm curious about other architectures as well.

Thank you.

Not that I'm aware of, at least for IOS based platforms.

BTW, what you might find will speed up your remote copy process, is using FTP or RCP rather than TFTP.
