Solved: ROMMON upgrade needed?

Hello,

I currently have a 2821 ISR w/ 256 MB of DRAM running IOS Version 12.4(11)T1. My current ROM version is Version 12.4(1r) [hqluong 1r]. I would like to upgrade IOS to 12.4(15)T17 on the device. Is it necessary to upgrade ROMMON prior to the IOS update or is the jump in current IOS to new IOS fine?

Marc,

a ROMMON upgrade is only needed if you want to use the USB flash drive. For that, you need release 12.4(13r)T, which adds boot from usb flash drive capability.

Otherwise, you don't need to upgrade the ROMMON.

I strongly recommend upgrading the ROMmon.

ROMmon upgrade and IOS upgrade can all be achieved by ONE (1) reboot. So why NOT upgrade the ROMmon?

The site is a 4.5 hour drive and there is no local resource to recover the device should it go sideways. That's why haha. I would like to upgrade it, but the risk isn't quite worth it.

I have been upgrading ROMmon since 2007 (since the arrival of ISR G1s) and I've never been able to brick a router with a ROMmon upgrade.
