I have a doubt. Please consider the below config.

vrf definition XYZ

rd 100:1

route-target export 109:1

route-target import 109:1

!

address-family ipv4

 route-target import 109:1

  route-target import 109:1

exit-address-family

Can someone tell me how the functionality  changes when route target is defined under vrf definition and the same defined under address-family ipv4 are different ?

Hi Derek,

when you specify the route-target under address-family ipv4 it will affect only IPv4 prefixes. So, the IPv4 routes that you will get imported or you will export will have the RT specified, in this case 109:1. If, for example, you´re using IPv6 as well and you do not defined an explicit Route Target under address-family ipv6, the RT that will get IPv6 prefixes will be the one that is used under vrf definition.

Hope this helps,

Jose.
