If you are trying to recover the password of your router then you can make use of this link ...

if you want to change the telnet(line vty) password then better way is to create additional sessions on line vty or else use password recovery and change the line vty password...

follow the above method.

config t

username new password new

no username old password old

see that you are loged in with new username after you have created on and then remove the old username and password.
