Router interfaces 'no shut' but still down

Hi Guys,

this will hopefully be a quick and easy question for you guys to solve. I have a router that I have to put a very basic configuration on just so out ISP can remotely log into it and begin their more detail configuration. I have configured it and configured a 'no shut' on the interfaces. 

when I connect the interfaces with the other gateway router on site the interfaces stay 'down, down' and will not come up. I have connected my laptop into the other gateway router on site with the same IP info as my preconfigured router and the interface works fine. but I cannot understand why the router interfaces won't come up.

I normally configure Switches & AP's which I'm more familiar with but I have completed the initial configuration for these routers in the past without this issue so I'm at a loss

Hi Paul,

thanks for your reply. it turns out the router was faulty. I managed to get the interfaces up and running but on speed 10, duplex full however it was very unstable and a 'no shut' would take varying times to actually bring the interface back up, aywhere from 1 -10 minutes.

I swapped the router out with another which fixed the issue.

Thanks for posting back to the forum to let us know that the real issue was a faulty router. Based on the limited initial description of the symptoms I would certainly agree with Paul that the most likely issue was cable - straight through or cross over. But your post may serve as a reminder to readers of the forum that sometimes things that initially look like one problem may turn out to be a different problem when you dig into them more deeply.
