I have a 128mb connection with a sa 500 series fw/router. When I turn on the ips function my throughput drops to 15 Mbps and the CPU max goes up to 100%. What gives?
When you turn on IPS then the router must perform packet inspection on every packet going through the router. While I would not have expected quite this dramatic difference, there is certainly a performance cost when the router has this much more heavy a load of work to do.
